The Significance of
Al Meissa By HEC

Another strategic IT initiative developed by HEC and HEDP is ‘Al-Meissa’ which establishes the concept of extremely High-Performance Computing (HPC). Al-Meissa is a part of the overall HEC’s strategic IT infrastructure solution that is soon going to revolutionize the national HEIs throughout the country by equipping them with unprecedented computing power. High performance computing will be possible as HEC builds supercomputers that can manage big data with relevant ease and ultimate precision. To achieve this, HEC has procured the latest hardware, premium tools, and equipment after a robust procurement process to ensure the most efficient and favorable cost to benefit ratio is achieved.

Naming the HPC initiative Al-Meissa holds a strong connection with modern astronomy since it is one of the brightest stars visible from our skies that resonates with unreal power. Al-Meissa is an Arabic origin word, which means brilliant or the bright one. Meissa has gained more fame since it is the brightest star within the Orion constellation. Al-Meissa is also known as Lambda Orionis, which is the brightest star in the Orion constellation. In ancient Arab culture, this star was associated with light, wisdom, and protection.

The constellation of Orion is well known by stargazers worldwide, and it bestows a magnificent sight to the beholder on a clear and icy winter night. Ancient people with amazing imaginations called it ‘The Hunter,’ at the head of the hunter we can witness Al-Meissa. Located halfway amid the fascinating stars of the Orion constellation, Betelgeuse, and Bellatrix. When observed with telescopes Al-Meissa appears to be two different stars, Meissa "A" being a very hot star with a temperature of 35,000 ºC and Meissa "B" a bit gentler at 27,000 ºC. Still, they emit an enormous amount of energy that creates a huge cloud of gas, radiating almost 65,000 times more by Meissa A and 5500 times more by Meissa B if compared with our own star.

Al-Meissa by HEC will facilitate large scale research initiatives while providing a 360-degree management and processing support for the big data that will be warehoused at the Astrolabes datacenters. HEC’s Al-Meissa will empower the HEIs to conduct groundbreaking research in all scientific fields that are leading global evolution. HEIs in Pakistan will have an impressive computing power that can easily facilitate them in navigating the future socio-economic development within the country and even internationally without having to spend an enormous volume of time and resources.

Al-Meissa can be used to design new medicines and healthcare materials. Researchers can simulate interactions between molecules, allowing them to identify particles that could be effective in treatments. It can also be used to model the chemical processes that occur in fuels combustion, which allows developing more fuel efficient and less polluting vehicles.

Biology

Al-Meissa can facilitate simulating the behavior of proteins and to analyze large sets of genetic data. Enabling scientists to better understand how proteins work and how genetic mutations affect our health. It can also be used to analyze large sets of genetic data, which makes it possible to identify genes associated with diseases and develop new treatments.

Meteorology and Climatology

Al-Meissa will enable relevant organizations to make long-term weather predictions. Helping scientists to better understand how climate relates to changes in our environment and how these changes affect the land. It can also simulate the effects of climate change, allowing scientists and political decision makers to take measures to mitigate its effects.

Al-Meissa Powering the Research Initiatives

Data is the reason modern groundbreaking scientific discoveries are happening all over the world. Innovations are changing the game for corporations worldwide which is why our quality of life is being improved as it seems like yesterday that automation and AI seemed far-reaching. HPC is the basis of scientific, industrial, and social advances. As technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and motion graphic designing, and 3d printing evolves, the size and amount of data that organizations must work with grows exponentially. For many objectives, such as watching a live streamed cricket match happening on the other side of the world, tracking an emerging storm, assessing new products, or studying the stock trends, the ability to process data in real time is decisive. To stay one step ahead of the competition, organizations need a highly reliable and fast IT infrastructure to process, store and analyze massive amounts of data.
