Question: What is PERN?

Answer: Pakistan Education & Research Network is the only research and education network of Pakistan which was launched in 2002. The purpose of this national research and education network is to provide communication infrastructure to the universities, institutions of higher learning and research organizations to meet their networking and internet requirements.

Question: What is NREN?

Answer: A National Research and Education Network (NREN) is a specialized internet service provider dedicated to supporting the needs of the research and education communities within a country. It is usually distinguished by support for a high-speed backbone network, often offering dedicated channels for individual research projects.

Question: Currently how Much Pakistan’s Universities/organizations are availing PERN services?

Answer: Currently PERN is giving services to Pakistan’s 142 Public/Private/Institute/Campuses and more new connectivity’s are under process.

Question: What is College Network Pakistan (CNP)?

Answer: College Network Pakistan is initiative of Higher Education department Punjab, to established 26 IT labs all over the Punjab Colleges. PERN is providing these Colleges IT labs all over the Punjab with its services.

Question: What are the PERN allied services?

Answer: PERN also offers following allied services to its partner institutes for the promotion of research and education in the country. Services like:

HEC National Digital, Turnitin , Cloud based Email Solution, Enterprise, Unified Communication, video conferencing, instant messaging, web conference, voice call, and collaborative interface.

Question: What is PERN’s Point of Presence (POP)?

Answer: Point of Presence: a junction/aggregation point of connections. Three (03) High End Carrier Class Core Routers at Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi are functioning as three Regional Access (RA) POPs whereas, Eight Local Access (LA) POPs in the three metro cities and Four Sub-Regional Access (sRA)POPs based on aggregation/ distribution routers of Carrier Class are operating in major cities of the country.
